“A Community of Love Sharing Journeys of Faith”
This motto was developed with five very important words—each one saying something important about the mission, the goals, and the life of St. Luke’s MCC.
Community: This speaks to the importance and joy of coming together for worship and fellowship. It is through our collective spiritual and social interactions that we seek to establish and develop a true sense of “belonging” for our members, friends, and first-time visitors. “Community” assures us of the fact that we are not alone.
Love: As a Christ-centered church, living in and demonstrating love, unconditional love, is the example we are challenged to follow. Jesus said the greatest commandments were to “love God with all your heart, soul, and mind” and to “love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt. 22:36-40) We believe that only through loving God—our Source of being—can we appreciate and truly love ourselves; and only by loving ourselves are we free to love and be at peace with others.
Sharing: The only way for us to be enriched by and grow into relationship with one another is for us to truly celebrate the beautiful diversity with which God has created us. We do that by sharing our lives with one another; learning from one another’s unique experiences; and, through the understanding that comes through such sharing, seeking to embrace one another as we walk the path of life together.
Journeys: This word is intentionally plural in form. We recognize that each one of us—and everyone who walks through the open doors of our church—is on a very personal and unique journey. Our members and friends come from a wide variety of faith traditions (Baptist, Episcopal, Pentecostal, Roman Catholic, Methodist, and others). Thus, their liturgy and worship experiences may differ. We also recognize that a vast array of experiences have fashioned each person into who they are, and the path they walk, at any given moment. As we come together, acknowledging and respecting those varied journeys, we grow as people and a family of faith.
Faith: We understand that the risks involved in opening oneself to “community,” to “love,” to “sharing,” and to pressing forward on our “journeys” require each person to exercise faith. It is upon the promises of God the Creator, the person of our Redeemer—Jesus the Christ, and the presence of our Sustainer—the Holy Spirit of Truth, that we seek to build our faith so that we are empowered to take the risks that love requires. In the words of Martin Luther King: “Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
